Experience
The impact of Trauma
After qualifying as a counsellor I found myself draw into the the theories of Dr Stephen Porges after attending a workshop on how the body is impacted by trauma.
After some further additional training in this area, learning and understanding the Polyvagal theory and how the body reacts long after a traumatic event, I was fortunate to be asked to work within a small team providing stabilisation to clients who had experienced sexual violence.
Being able to understand the impact of trauma on the body can give the power back to the individual to learn to find new ways to cope and bring about the safety and change that is needed to repair the body after such an horrific event.
Today we find ourselves in very challenging times due to a number of factors,we are bombarded with negativity going on in the world in the news and social media, awful events are constanstly being replayed and revisted and this is having a very detemental affect on us in our day to day living.
If you add this onto the trauma you have experienced in your life, whether it be a historic or recent event, you can easily see why suddenly one day you find yourself unable to cope with everyday challenges.
The things you once enjoyed become a distant memory and the small everyday tasks become completely overwhelming.
When working with trauma in the past it was often seen that the only way to recover from trauma is to revisit it and this can seem very scary, though a background is needed to fully understand the work that is needed the constant revisiting an event isn't always required. Though there are certain exceptions with some therapies.
Looking at how the brain functions after a traumatic event can give you the client a great deal of peace and understanding, when it comes to thinking patterns and behaviours, with this knowledge is power.
Working on gaining control and building resilience can change the way you see the world and help you begin to understand that you do have the internal strenght needed to move forward, not letting your past define your present.
